AKRONGuns stolenAKRON: A collection of firearms ranging from an AK-47 assault rifle to handguns was taken during a burglary this week at an Akron home.The Hancock Avenue resident told police that she left her home Wednesday morning and forgot to lock a rear sliding glass door.When she returned in the afternoon, the 45-year-old woman found the glass door open, her dogs outside in the rain and a collection of firearms missing.The missing weapons include the assault rifle, two .38-caliber pistols, seven rifles and four shotguns, police said.Dad stabbedAKRON: An Akron man underwent emergency surgery Thursday after police say he was stabbed several times. His son is accused of attacking him over orders to move out of the home.Aaron Mills, 21, is being held in the Summit County Jail on a charge of felonious assault domestic violence.His father, Otho Mills, 41, was in stable condition at Summa Akron City Hospital.Police say Aaron Mills has a history of mental illness and has been arrested in the past for assaulting his father after being told to move out.According to police, the stabbing Thursday occurred about 4 p.m. in the family’s Eastland Avenue home.Police say the father was stabbed multiple times in the abdomen.Court records show Aaron Mills has a conviction for domestic violence against his father. In that January 2010 case, Otho Mills was choked and shoved into a window after the 6-foot-7, 280-pound son became angry over being told to find a new place to live, according to a police report.Aaron Mills served 115 days in jail after his conviction in Akron Municipal Court. Not guilty of rapeAKRON: A 45-year-old Akron man has been found not guilty of rape and two counts of sexual battery in connection with an incident in June involving a 27-year-old woman, authorities said. In a Summit County jury trial that ended Thursday, Samuel W. Feaster III was convicted of one misdemeanor count of criminal damaging.Defense attorney Jonathan Sinn said Feaster was released from custody after the verdicts, with credit for time served in the county jail. Prosecutors had accused Feaster of having nonconsensual sex with the woman while he was staying at her mother’s home, under house arrest for driving with a suspended license.Sinn said Feaster is an uncle of Tyree Feaster, 21, who is serving a 13-year sentence for his role in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Shawrica Lester outside the Cage teen nightclub.Last month, Akron’s 9th District Court of Appeals ruled that Tyree Feaster can withdraw his guilty plea to involuntary manslaughter in the 2007 slaying. TALLMADGEStandoff in cityTALLMADGE: Tallmadge police say a city man barricaded himself inside his home for nearly four hours beginning Thursday night.Officers were called to the home in the 1100 block of Woods Drive around 11 p.m. because of a report of shots being fired.Officers found a spent shell casing on the patio of the home. A female and two teenagers then came outside. Larry G. Beall Jr., who lives in the home, refused to come out and showed officers a gun. Authorities say Beall told officers that he wanted to die.The Summit County Sheriff’s SWAT team was called in and began negotiating with the man, who eventually surrendered at 2:50 a.m. Beall faces charges of disrupting public service, using weapons while intoxicated, discharging firearms and disorderly conduct. CANTONUA student killedCANTON: A University of Akron student was shot and killed on the way to Bible study Thursday night in what police described as an attempted robbery.Dale Settle Jr., 22, of Jackson Township, died shortly before 5:30 a.m. Friday at Aultman Hospital from a gunshot to his abdomen.Police are looking for two unidentified men, one of whom was carrying a pistol. Descriptions of the men were not specific.The shooting was in the 600 block of Hazlett Avenue near the home of the Bible study.CUYAHOGA VALLEYSanta’s helpersThe National Park Service and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad are seeking volunteers to help stage the Polar Express in November and December.Children clad in pajamas board the train and travel through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park to hear Chris Van Allsburg’s The Polar Express.Volunteers are needed assist Santa Claus, read the story, assist in creating a festive atmosphere in rail cars and serve cookies and hot chocolate. Training will be provided.The Polar Express runs Nov. 17 through Dec. 20 except for Nov. 23-24 from Akron and from Independence. Terry C. Wright, 21, was supporting combat operations in Helmand Province. An infantryman, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary force based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.He had been in the Marines since 2008 and was deployed to Afghanistan in July.Scio is in Harrison County, 30 miles southeast of Canton. SUMMIT COUNTYAppraisal meetingsAKRON: Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen Scalise will hold the final reappraisal neighborhood conferences from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Kenmore Community Center, 880 Kenmore Blvd.Ohio law mandates the county to reappraise residential properties every six years and update property values in the third year after the reappraisal.County workers will be available to review and discuss values with homeowners.All complaints must be filed with the Fiscal Office by 4 p.m. Oct. 3. Complaints received after that deadline must be decided by the county Board of Revision.Road reopenedCOVENTRY TWP.: Portage Lakes Drive between Peach Drive and Cormany Road was reopened Wednesday after a 48-day closing.Summit County Engineer Al Brubaker had closed the eastbound lane because of erosion along the lake after a July 19 storm. Two-way traffic had been maintained with a traffic signal.Workers placed alternating layers of rock and polyester fabric to reinforce and stabilize the retaining wall in two areas, and made repairs to the pavement.
